Ascent Trip ReportBegan at 9:10 am at Unicoi Gap. Proceeded up the AT on a moderately steep grade to Rocky Mt. No views from summit, but nice views south soon thereafter. Crossed Indian Grave Gap and Tray Gap on AT headed towards Tray Mt. After enjoying a quick lunch and views to the S and NNW, I went further East to explore. After .2 mile, turned around, then headed back towards Tray Gap. Once on FR 698, I headed north towards Brier Creek Bald. It took 9 minutes and 41 seconds walking at a brisk pace to reach the overgrown dirt road on the left. The road climbed steeply, but ended abruptly with about 250 yards to go. Followed a faint herd trail when possible, bushwhacked when it was unavailable. The summit is small and rounded and cannot be mistaken once reached. I proceeded down the way I came. Followed FR 698 to Tray Gap, then took FR 79 to its first crossing with the AT. Got back on the AT to Indian Grave. From there, I walked N on FR 283 for .6 miles to the signed entrance to the Rocky Mt. Trail. This is a bypass of the summit, but it is somewhat strenuous. There is a nice creek crossing. This is a pleasant alternative on the return trip for someone who doesn't want to take the same path out as they took in. After 1.2 miles, it meets back up with the AT west of Rocky Mt. summit. From there, it is a quick walk back to the TH. Ended at 2:45 pm. Estimated distance hiked/walked is 12 miles.
