Ascent Trip Report

Ran the Mount Ashland Hill Climb for the first time. I hadn't been training much and I had no idea where the course went so I didn't have high expectations of running well. The course started easy enough up a road that wasn't too steep. The paved road turned into fireroad and it continued not being too steep. Other than a short steeper sections, the grade for the first 8.5 miles was pretty consistent. Over that period we gained 3,469 feet which is 408 feet per mile.

From miles 8.5 to 10.0 it flattened out from 8.5 to 10 and even seemed downhill a bit although my Garmin doesn't appear to reflect this much. Garmin shows we gained 98 feet in this section bringing us to 5,474 feet.

From mile 10.0 to mile 12.54 we climbed up to 6,573 feet (1,099 total, 432 per mile) which didn't feel that difficult. Toward the end of that stretch we passed the ski lodge which was around mile 12. The course rule is that once we get to the ski lodge we could take any route to the top. Since I didn't know the way I followed the crowd and the main trail. just after the ski lodge it got a little steeper and I forced to walk for the first time.

From mile 12.54 to the finish (which per my Garmin was at mile 13.23 we climbed from 6573 feet to 7,484 feet. So over last 0.69 miles we gained 911 feet (a whopping 1,320 feet per mile). This was basically a scramble up the side of the mountain. We could see the finish line from the bottom of the scramble but it seemed to take forever navigating up it, especially after having climbed for so long. Falling wouldn't have caused serious injury, but it was basically a steep hill with clumbs of grass, some rocks, and no trail. Everyone seemed to go a different way. It took me over 19 minutes to cover this section!

The views from the top were very good and I got some pictures with my friends Erika and Hans.
