Ascent Trip Report

The drive to Mt. Carleton Park is very remote. The park representatives were very friendly. They all spoke French as their preferred language in this region of NB. They allow a carpool so a park ranger can drop your car off and get a thru-hike. We dropped our car off at the parking lot near the Mount Carleton TH and the ranger then dropped us off at the TH that busts up the stream between Mount Head and Mount Sagamook (Bald Mountain Brook Tr). We left at 11:15 AM and I hiked nearly 9 miles and 2400 feet with my family getting all three peaks plus the observation point and we were down at 5:20 PM from the entire trip.

Daniel and I climbed Mount Head in addition to Carleton and Sagamook. I think Sagamook was over-rated in write ups and Carleton was under-rated as hikes. I saw a snake on the trail which surprised me that there were snakes that far north. The terrain was very unique on the walk up this trail as it passed us by a nice waterfall covered in thick moss. This area was about as mossy as I have ever seen and the flower structure growing out of the moss matts were unusual. There was a krumholtz type ecology near the bald peak.

The park rangers recommended this particular route up Sagamook because of the waterfall and mossy trail features. We were happy with the selection. Only I was interested in venturing around the west side of the mountain to find the observation point that held the more spectacular view from the mountain (it is a bit down slope). The view was nice but not that much more spectacular than that from Mount Head. My family was not interested in the side trip since it caused you to lose and retake gain we had already obtained in bagging the actual summit of Sagamook. I added this additional mileage and gain to the "down" stats.
