Ascent Trip Reportbagged ryan mtn as part of a 3 day car camp. sat., 3-22, the italian and i set up camp early morning at jumbo rocks. campgrounds were full. we check several camps before spotting this site. some others had just struck camp.
after setting up camp, we hiked to lost horse mine. saw the old, rusting mining equipment. lots of 4 foot high walls scattered around. assuming they were constructed as shelters. shot-up water tanks. lots of rusted cable. a few lizards.
we then headed to hidden valley and hiked around for an hour.
following this we hiked barker damn loop. just past the damn where the trail makes an L- shaped turn to the left, we continued on to the northern section of wonderland of rocks area. then came back up. saw the disney petroglyphs.
took in the welcome to the neighborhood show at the camp ampitheater that night which was an introduction to the critters living in joshua tree natl park.
next day we hit ryan mtn and lost palms oasis. we mistakenly parked at the american indian rock shelter site, but found our way up to the trail. the shelter's roof is covered in soot. a few morteros and a matate is about it. lots of white butterflies. ravens. lizards. beautiful view of the valleys.
at cottonwood spring we headed to lost oasis. it had started to get hot. the wildflowers were out of control. everything was in bloom. lots of blooming ocotillo. spent a half hour at the oasis. no water. lots of washington palms. juncus. saw a sparrow and a chuckwalla. lots of hikers. talked with an american indian elder who had been playing a flute out near the oasis. he showed me his flute, played a few notes, and blessed me. very pleasant fellow and very nice winter hiking area. took us just over an hour to hike out, but it took us twice that to hike in. it was a lot cooler hiking out.
back at camp, a ranger gave a talk and show on bird sounds that evening.
last day we struck camp. on the way, we stopped at morongo canyon to see if we could spot some birds. we could hear them, but finding the little rascals was problematic. i got stung by a bee. bees had made a hive just off the boardwalk. got the stinger out quickly. no noticeable swelling. stopped stinging after an hour.
