Ascent Trip Report

Having reviewed the forecast we quickly left Idre (where we had spent a week with Karin's family) and drove west for seven hours until we reached the Jotunheimen - "home of the giants". We got the last, really tiny, room at the nice mountain hotel Spiterstulen and started our ascent just before 8 in the morning. Initially we hiked alone but after an hour or so the first Norwegians started to pass us. I would not say that Gustav (7 years) slowed Karin and me down, but of course it was a bit heavy to carry Karl (3 in October) all the way (and approximately 1,500 meters of vertical gain) to the summit. The clouds dissolved as we gained altitude and soon the warm sun lighted up the snowfields and the ridges between the glaciers. On the top we met all the climbers in the guided tours from Juvasshytta (which we originally had planned to join, but which did not accept children under the age of 7), which made the summit quite crowded. The way down was a bit harsh, especially since we had underestimated the amount of snow and should have bought gaiters or higher boots to Gustav... Nevertheless, a fantastic and memorable mountain hike with perfect weather conditions and which lasted for 11 hours!
