Ascent Trip Report

For a metropolitan area, this mountain provides some of the best nature and hiking trails. When you mix in the history along the entire trail, it's one of my favorites. Unlike my home trails in the North Georgia Mountains, there are a lot of people using this area. The trail up to the top of Kennesaw Mountain from the visitors center is as steep as anyone needs for an excellent aerobic workout. This is the site of one of the many great battles during the civil war, as the Confederate Army tried to desperately defend Atlanta from Sherman's invaders. It amazes me that the Union Army thought it would be a good idea to hurl themselves up the incredibly steep slopes towards the Confederate Army. The history makes the trail that much more appealing to me.

Of course, when you reach the summmit, there is an area where folks riding up in buses pour out of them to take a look at the view. To the south, you can see Atlanta's skyline, and to the north, sprawling suburbia. As you continue on, the trail takes you to Little Kennesaw Mountain. The trail continues to fall as you approach Pigeon Hill which is strewn with boulders with cannons wedged into very defensiblle positions, then down to a gravel road that loops you back around to the Visitor's center. On the way, you get some nice views at the range you just traversed. This was a very hot day and I didn't have as much water as I would have liked. Take extra water if possible. A great place!
