Ascent Trip ReportMacon county has one contour above 1100 feet a few miles north of the Smith county line.
To reach it, take TN-25 west out of Carthage, TN (home of Al Gore – be sure to see the Gore-Liberman Store on the square in town). Bear right (north) on to TN-80 and go a little over 12 miles. Turn right on Sloan Rd; to high point is about a quarter mile down the road on the right.
On my visit, the house Ken Oeser mentioned was inhabited by a Hispanic family and, with the translation help of the daughter, I was able to get permission to walk in their backyard. By observation though, the front yard might be slightly higher near a large tree.
During my visit, TN-80 was closed for road repairs about 5.3 miles north of the junction with TN-25. I was able to take some “pig paths” (as the construction worker put it) on the west side of the road around the construction. These “pig paths” were narrow country lanes but they were paved and easily passable. I took Nickajack Rd and Toetown Rd back to TN-80 a few miles north of where I left it.
