Ascent Trip Report

After completing Kibby earlier in the morning with around 1,200 feet and 4.4 miles hiking we drove back around 45 minutes to the TH of Number Five Mountain which is far easier to reach and parked at the clearing and took the fire warden trail. The path starts out steep, wide and grassy and becomes progressively narrow and wet. Karen warns that this is not a pleasant hike for those in shorts as the fir and spruce up near the Krumholtz region scratch as the path becomes not much larger than a herd trail and there are a lot of moss bogs so there is a lot of mud and slipping. The woods in the midsection of the hike are very wet woods with a lot of moss and clearly receive some rain.

This hike would not be a very pleasant hike if it were not for the rewarding peak which has some wide open slabs with great views in all directions. I liked this peak better than Kibby but the approach was not as nice as Kibby.

There is also an old tower that is still quite tall - several sections around 50 feet tall but dangerous and that it does not have safe rails and no bottom at the top. Be careful.. The winds picked up on our climb of it and without more railing it was a bit sketchy in hard gusts. Karen climbed to the top but the winds drove her down after a good photo shot.

In keeping with the wet conditions - we saw many amphibians along the way. I would estimate we saw 10 giant American toads, and several species of frogs including nothern leopard, and some sort of small bronze frog, and a salamandar.
