Ascent Trip ReportThe hard part of this hike is getting to the TH. Spencer Road is fairly well graded and you can average around 35 mph with some slow downs to 15 for curves, bumps, and bridges but other stretches near the intersection with Golden Brook Road were far slower. Golden Brook was well graded. Nobody was there at the TH today. The wind tubine farm is nearby and you can see them up close and personal. They were not noisy and interesting to watch.
The TH is easy to follow and not too steep. It took about an hour to ascend up to the tower. There were great 360 degree views of the Canadian border and other nearby mountains but as luck would have it started raining the minute we reached the peak and the tower was windy and cold. It is only a remnant tower now on the peak at around 10 feet. There is some rolling terrain at the beginning of the hike that gives a little extra gain each way.
This is a very remoted peak to get to. It affords worthwhile views but is a long drive and only a moderate hike. The most interesting thing for us was the up close and personal visit of the wind turbines.
The most interesting mountains we saw on the approach to this hike were 3-slide mountain which does have three distinct rock slides that give it interesting character (I do not know if there is a trail up it but the rock slides are a possible route) and Crisco Peak had some subspeaks near the main road that had exposed rock with some interesting walls that would make a fun bushwhack.
Since the Kibby hike was relatively easy and only around 1,200 feet of gain we drove back and climbed Number 5 Mountain and checked out the tower on the top of that mountain next.
