Ascent Trip ReportBenton County Mississippi has two contours above 760 feet; one with a 771 foot benchmark. My trip and report varied greatly from Bob Packard and followed Michael Schwartz’s.
I approached the points from Memphis by taking US-72 south-southwest from Collierville, TN for 32+ miles and turn left (north) on Whippoorwill Rd. Follow Whippoorwill 3 miles as it bends to right and you arrive almost due north of the high points at address 3891 Whippoorwill Rd. The home owners own the fields inside the gate on the south side of the road that lead to the high point.
Unlike Michael’s report, they were home and were very friendly to my request to enter their gate. The wife gave me her keys and I ran across the road to unlock the gate and then returned her keys. The husband had suffered a stroke and was in ill health but they were both outside trimming trees in the front yard.
I was able to drive quite far into their property and probably could have driven to the Malone benchmark in a higher clearance vehicle. I left my car at approximately N34.98028, W89.08465 and continued up an overgrown farm road, taking one sharp left to reach the top. The land owners had many cattle roaming the property but they left me alone and I left them alone.
The rest of my trip followed Michael’s. The benchmark was left of center in the open field at the top right next to a small tree.
My bushwhack to the southern point was a little rougher then Michael’s report indicated; some of it might be due to my route finding ability however. The stile is still there as reported although I think all of his coordinates should be 89 degrees West and not 84 degrees (which would be in Georgia). The rest of Michael’s directions are good but some of the landmarks are more overgrown then might have been when he visited.
