Ascent of Elliott Knob in 1996-08

Ascent Trip ReportI have hiked to this peak twice during my time in Virginia. Once with Leo Ladage and the other time with Becky Wood. Leo and I reached the summit via the North Mountain Trail. It was in late August because I remember the copious amounts of ripe blackberries along the lower section of the trail. Near the top, this route requires about a 1/4 mile ascent of a forest road that is extremely steep. After much huffing and puffing, you are rewarded by a nice spring-fed pond that is just below the summit. On a clear day, there isn't a much better view looking east across the Shenandoah Valley. We even had the unexpected treat of seeing a fighter jet come screaming east of the ridge, lower than where we were. Looking down on a fighter jet is pretty awesome.
I had earlier in the year completed this hike with Becky Wood via the Elliot Knob Trail that ascends to the peak from the North. One memory that sticks out on this trip was that I walked through a section of the trail that was over-run by a weed that raked my lower legs as I passed them. Well, they turned out to be nettles which made the hike pretty unpleasant. One of those experiences that makes you appreciate good trail maintenance.
