Ascent Trip ReportGreat trip up the mountain and a perfect warm-up hike for the year. The cairn marking the trailhead was rather small, so I tried to increase its visibility. A windmill looms not far ahead of the trailhead, so if you hit one of those you've gone too far. Easy hike meandering on old logging/jeep road to the top of the mountain. Didn't get strenuous until the last few tenths of a mile.
ATVs (which are not allowed on the paper company's roads) or 4x4s had obviously been going a long ways up the road/trail recently, but it wasn't worth the risk for us (and where's the fun in hiking if you drive?). There were very few spots to turn around a bigger vehicle and lots of mud puddles, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you really knew what you were doing.
The trail does split once, and you'll want the right fork. here the going get's a little tougher and the road begins to close in on the sides. There's a small cairn marking the correct way to go, but we completely missed it going up. Not real views for much of the hike and not much can be seen from the top unless you climb the old fire warden's tower. It sits about 10 feet up, but be careful because much of the wood is rotting away. However the views from the towers are fantastic, looking back at Flagstaff Lake, Bigelow, and even Sugarloaf. You can also see into the mountains of Rangeley, Jackman, and Quebec.
