Ascent Trip Report

This summit was a battle. After a long hike over Huntersfield and Ashland Pinnacle yesterday, I was only able to get within .4 mile north of Richmond's summit on the Long Path before turning around. Never did find a good way up from the west. Today I hiked in from the shorter route over Mt. Pisgah. About .2 mile west past the Richtmyer Peak summit, the trail bisects an ATV path leading off the ridgetop on both sides. The path to the left is marked by yellow DEC discs while the bright aqua blazes of the Long Path go down to the right. I also noticed a faded aqua blaze straight ahead at this intersection.
I decided to follow the Long Path to the right and after 15 minutes I reached my turn-around point from yesterday with no obvious route to the summit. I then retraced my steps back to the intersection to check out the old, faded blaze. After walking off-trail into the woods past the old blaze, I was not able to find any more so I went back to the intersection to try the yellow DEC route. This trail initially went in the direction of the summit then started descending too much. I knew at this point I would be bushwhacking so I headed uphill to regain the ridgetop and found a few overgrown woods tracks to help me along. Once on the ridgetop, I was able to find another aqua-blazed trail that I assumed was another old section of Long Path. This trail stayed to the ridgetop for awhile, then descended to the north of the summit but not as far down as the current Long Path. It then brought me over to the west side where I left the path on another overgrown track then had a short bushwhack to the summit. Had an easier time on the way back as I was able to follow the ridgetop path all the way back to the Long Path/Yellow DEC Trail intersection. When I went in here originally, I stayed pretty much straight but the path angles up to the left. It is also better marked going east than west. Glad this one is over with.
