Ascent Trip ReportI climbed Sue Peaks from the Old Ore Road in Big Bend National Park. I parked along side the road about 2.8 miles south of the Dagger Flat Road, elevationn 3,132, and hiked cross country from there. It may have been closer to hike from Telephone Canyon #2 campsite, but there may have been some rock bands to climb to get up to the ridge from that direction.
I just hiked across the desert towards the peak. There are lots of washes to cross and use as trails along the way. By the time I got up to Javalina Creek, I found that there had been a range fire along the route. This was great for hiking. I stayed in the burned area to cross about 2.5 miles of desert and climb up the ridge to about 5,000 feet. Then I just followed the ridge up and down all the way to the furthest high point. A small register was found. The views were great. The cactus not so great. This hike took me almost 9 hours to complete. No water on the route, lots of desert. No technical climbing, just a long hike on a beautiful day. |
