On way back from seeing brother in Port Charlotte, forced the family on a nice hike on state lands for the most pleasant temperatured afternoon of the year. We did not see any tortoises but there were hundereds of burroughs to see. Highlite of the trip was the 10-12 FL Scub Jays located. Over the past 30 years, we have seen few of this highly endangered birds but they were all along the section line jumping from the sandlive oaks to the various sand-scrub oaks the east. They were very noisy and have a very colorful tail feather.
The maintained trails were very easy walking through the tough scrub, but the section cut lines had been disked recently and were very loose sand so each step we sank and filled our shoes with sand. The kids complained that Dad took them out there. If you choose to take the cleared section lines, be aware that the current condition of the disked sand along the fenced off area is not for low top shoes (like my son's Sperrys) and the ground drops into swampier land transitioning through blackberries down into higher water table soils with pines and lots of ferns till you hit the county line. Then some buswhacking is required. There are two HPs along the line. |
