Ascent Trip Report

We climbed Wilson via the Lovell Canyon approach cited in Zdon's Desert Summits. The dirt road now ends at two large rocks at approximately 5600 feet. We followed the wash up from the start, bearing right at major intersections. We exited left out of the wash at around 6350 feet, which brought us onto a ridge leading to the main crest of the Spring Mountains. We emerged on to the crest just south of Peak 6969 and soon made our way to the top, where we found a register naming this point First Creek Overlook Peak.

The ensuing descent towards the Wilson saddle proved to be the biggest challenge of the day The southeast face was a massive cliff, the east ridge was a series of fractured limestone pinnacles, which left us to try our luck off the northeast face. This turned out to be some of the toughest Class 2 that I have encountered; extremely loose limestone rock on top of frozen ground. In spots, it was almost impossible to avoid falling down the hillside on your butt, while tearing up your legs and hands in the process. It ended up taking us the better part of an hour to descend the 500 vertical feet to the saddle west of Wilson. From here the sharp limestone soon gave way to the smooth sandstone and it was a easy scramble up to the summit. Once on top, a small storm began to roll in and we were soon in the midst of a light snow flurry.

The return back to PT 6969 was another struggle up the steep loose slope. There was much pain and cursing as we slipped and crawled our way back up to the ridge. From here, it was an easy descent back to the vehicle.
