Ascent Trip Report

In the town of Socorro from the main north-south street, take route 60 west toward Magdalena. Follow the highway for 15.6 miles to a signed road to Water Canyon Campground. Turn left on this paved road and drive southwest gradually ascending into the canyon. At about 4.8 miles turn left into the campground. At this point note a sign that says the Langmuir Laboratory is ten miles. Follow the good dirt road south and at 8.1 miles go right at a junction. There are some steep section and numerous switchbacks on this road which is generally fine for most cars with good tires. At 12.5 miles the road will come to a locked gate. Park here and walk a few hundred feet up the road then turn right and follow a road to the top of South Baldy. The lookout tower has long ago been removed. There is a wide spot suitable for camping about 0.8 miles down from the locked gate where the road makes a wide bend and goes north for a short way. 5/02 RLC
