Ascent Trip ReportTo reach the starting point for the hike of Mt. Disappointment take the Angeles Crest Highway, route 2, north from La Canada/Flintridge. There is an exit for this highway on the Foothill Freeway, no. 210. Drive route 2 for 13.5 miles to Red Box Gap and Station and turn right toward Mt. Wilson. Follow this winding paved road for 2.3 miles to Eaton Saddle and a large parking area on both sides of the road. Park here and go east past the gate onto the Old Mt. Wilson Road. The road goes through Meuller Tunnel and on to a saddle with a concrete water tank on the right. From here take the trail on the right toward the saddle between Disappointment and San Gabriel Peak. When you reach the trail junction at the saddle turn left and walk over to the paved road and follow it on around the NW side to the top. The paved road is route 2N52 which goes down to a point on the Mt. Wilson Road 0.4 miles from the junction with hwy. 2. This is an alternate route to the summit with a bit more elevation gain. 9/97 RLC |
