Ascent Trip Report

Interesting day. Drove out to the In-Ko-Pa park area expecting to find some pretty clear maps. This wasn't the case. Excellent trip reports from this site, and CoHP.org helped tremendously. From the sign display at the parking area, I initially tried to head around to the east side, but quickly found the road impassable. I struck out to the west and as the dirt road headed south, I came across a gate. The gate was open, but it clearly said "No Trespassing." Not wanting to make the patrolling Border Control guys cranky, I decided to drive back to one I saw just off the road and ask him about ways up Blue Angel Peak. He was terrific. He said not to worry about the gate, just drive straight back. I asked about the condition of the road, and he said "Follow me" and led me back. We went all the way back to what he described as the "Trail up that all you hikers use." That worked for me. The first thing I ran into was a shooting range of sorts, with hundreds of spent shells and blown apart television sets and other targets. From there, I followed roads that generally trended east and south. I am editing my GPS track for inclusion on this site, which will help. Finally, the road moves just along the Mexico border, then swings north up past an old water tank. From here follow a shallow wash north and then east. This will bring the 3 candidates for Blue Angel Peak into view. I bushwhacked up to the northern one, scrambled over that (and saw the benchmarks), then crossed to the other two lumps. Stick to the west side, the going is easier (as I learned coming back). You can clearly see Peak 1380 in Mexico just another 2 or 3 hundred yards. If you go for it, drop down to the clear trail just below the border monument, it is quite easy to get through the fence there. Lots of trash about, but if you see water stashes, leave them, as every year folks die out here. Sad.
