Ascent Trip Report

Rather than follow the rest of the trip reports, I tried a new approach from the north, over Johnson Hill - see trip report from that ascent for details on parking, etc. It would be possible to come in to this hill from the north and skip Johnson Hill and all of the bushwhacking by going in and out on the route which I used to return to the car. That would make for a 4-ish mile round trip, mostly on old woods roads that are very easy to follow.

From Johnson Hill, bushwhacked southwest, attempting to follow the top of the ridge but actually getting off to the west side of it a bit. Coming out of the saddle towards the north side of S Johnson Hill, I crossed a woods road which, according to my GPS, went just west of S Johnson and then approached the summit from the more gradual northwest slope. I tried to follow this but lost any trace of the road before it really started climbing, and went back to bushwhacking to reach the summit. Found the cairn and register eventually, although I had to wander around a bit since the summit area is fairly flat.

The summit area has been more-or-less clear-cut since many of the trip reports - the "overgrown road" approaching the summit is now very obvious, and some logging equipment was parked near the junction when I visited. I went down this way, headed east on the dirt road towards Pond Hill Road, but then turned north instead of south and followed an overgrown (but obvious) woods road back to Massachusetts and my car.
