Ascent Trip ReportAs far as I can determine, Barnett Knob is the 4th highest named summit in Mississippi. My son, Marshall, and I parked my car on a road to the south of Barnett Knob and entered the woods at a point with signs indicating that this was a Federal Wildlife Management Area. Although we heard hunting hounds and saw several parked pickup trucks before we arrived at our parking spot, we hiked cautiously through the forest directly toward Barnett Knob. The forest was not dense so the travel was easy and it allowed us to observe an area of several hundred yards around us most of the time. We only had about 3/4 mile to cover to the summit, but it was a pretty hike across rolling terrain. Just before the summit, we reached an ATV trail and followed it the last 200 feet to the top of Barnett Knob where we found an unoccupied deer stand on a flat summit without a very good vista because of the trees. We returned to the car without seeing anybody else, which was surpring, since there seemed to be a lot of hunters parking along the road we were parked on.
