Ascent Trip ReportCannon county has 3 contours above 2080 feet including one with a spot elevation of 2092 feet; all of the points are located on Short Mountain east of Woodbury near the county line.
I visited Short Mountain on an over cast day shortly before Thanksgiving and saw no other visitors during my trip but the entire top of the mountain is owned by nearby Short Mountain Bible Camp and is posted for hunting during the Fall so discretion might be exercised during hunting season.
The largest contour is in the area that is fenced off around the fire tower and direct access is not available. The fenced area is quite large and took some time to walk around. There is a small point south of the fire tower that shows a 2080 foot contour but it is obviously lower than the fire tower area.
The third area is northwest of the fire tower and about .15 miles off of the road. There is a large new radio tower, likely build after Mike Beavers visit that partially obscures the road he mentions. Walk around the radio tower on the north side of the road and one can easily see the road/ATV path that leads north. A short walk will lead to the high point contour and an additional short walk will lead to the overlook he mentions that is complete with a tree-stump lectern and rows of benches that likely belong to the bible camp that is a few hundred feet below the overlook.
I approached from the west, taking US-70S (John Bragg Highway) east out of Murfreesboro going toward Woodbury.
On the east side of Woodbury, leave US-70S and continue east on TN-53/Gassway Rd. Gassway becomes Stones River Rd; continue on this for about 7 miles until the intersection with TN-146/Short Mountain Rd and turn north (left).
Continue 1 mile until Gunter Hallow Rd and turn left. (sign for Wolf Pen Fire Tower)
Follow Gunter Hallow Rd to the top of the mountain.
Note: near the top, bear left at the entrance the Short Mountain Bible Camp, continuing on Firetower Rd.
Also note: my GPS showed Sally Parton Rd to the south of Gunter Hallow as also reaching the top of Short Mountain. This is not the case. Gunter Hallow is the only way to the top.
Note: the Dekalb county liner is not far from Short Mountain
