Ascent Trip Report

Fun little side trip off of doing the county HP which is in the end simply a million large towers. Shinnal Mountain and Crystal Mountain are essential the same small range divided by a small notch at around elevation 770 where Gordon Road and 2 Towers Road meet. Someone simply named each side of the range differently. Crystal mountain, too has several towers and two peaks. The taller peak on the mountain is given a name on the USGS map as "Bear Den Mountain" which is really over kill since it is simply the tallest peak on Crystal Mountain which is arguably simply the eastern second tallest sub-peak of Shinall Mountain. In any case it does have its own prominence and more importantly - it has a nice rock face just made for free scrambling and no antenae.

The scrambling is more lower class 3 although locals have bolted an anchor into the top of the rift along the south wall and obviously do some lower class 5 and rappelling from this small sedimentary wall. Karen and I located the peak and then found a fun little rift to scramble to the bottom that was solid class 3. Anytime you can turn a county HP adventure into an off-road open country scramble - that aint a bad way to start the morning. Got back to the car having completed both peaks are our first warm up hike of the day.
