Ascent Trip ReportA rocky trail and a short bushwack to 2 Peaks ..... 5.8 miles, 3h3o hours RT for both Peaks
PROSPECT MOUNTAIN ...... 1.5 miles rocky trail, 1h00 hour for the climb only.
The TH for this climb is at the corner of Cooper/Montcalm Streets in Lake George Village. To get there from the Village center, stop light at Canada (hwy 9) and Montcalm Streets (restaurant Gino and Tony's on corner), drive west on Montacalm .25 miles to its end ..... the signed "Prospect Mountain TH" with a kiosk is straight ahead.
The trail goes over the Northway (I87) on a bridge before it starts its westerly climb. It crosses the toll auto road on the way to the summit. It is very rocky moderate trail except for the moderately-steep section towards the top.
The summit is a huge rocky area with picnic grounds, the auto road (closed on this day) circles the HP, 200 meters to the south is a huge parking lot. There are 3 BM "US Coast & Geodetic Survey Triangulation Station, House 2, 1967", the actual HP is outside the Triangulation BMs, my GPS at my chosen spot read 43.42467, -73.74571.
From this Peak I decided to take in Black Bruce Mountain, visible to the west.
BLACK SPRUCE MOUNTAIN ...... 4.3 miles, 2 hours which includes the climb from Prospect Mountain and the descent back down to the TH in Lake George Village.
From the summit of Prospect Mountain I descended south to the west end of the large parking lot, then went west on the paved sidewalk to the first bump capped with 7 Communication Towers (.3 miles). A dirt service road heads (.4 miles) west to a second bump with 4 Communication Towers (pass a Tower on the right 100 yards before).
A gated private-woods-track continues/winds its way (.5 miles) to the south side ridge where I turned right and bushwacked generally north to the summit (.2 miles), open deciduous woods, easy going.
The wooded summit has a concrete BM, marked with a number of pink ribbons on trees, my GPS read 43.42161, -73.76747. The estimated 1.4 mile distance from Prospect took me 40 minutes. I descended back to the TH going around/below the Prospect summit (2.9 miles, 1h30 hours).
