Ascent Trip ReportThis was my first solo hike.
I wanted to hike the Hooksett Pinnacle for a while, so I did it today (11/19/2011). I made sure to wear blaze orange just in case there were hunters around.
The trailhead for the trail I took is near the Pinnacle St/Birch Hill Rd intersection. It is marked by two wooden cylinder-like things. I parked a few feet to the left of the trail on Pinnacle St. I got my stuff together, put on a blaze orange vest and hat, and started walking.
The trail went through woods and a little open patch. There were houses surrounding most of the peak, so it's not exactly isolated from civilization. After a few minutes of hiking, I saw a shortcut trail to the left, and I decided to take it.
The shortcut had an easy grade and then went up steeply. Leaves covering it didn't help with the ascent. When I got to the top of the steep section, I didn't see any trail, so I went back down to the main trail and took that.
The main trail was longer and easier to follow. I eventually got close to houses, maybe a little too close. I didn't see any trail, so I gave the shortcut a second try.
After hiking the section I previously mentioned, I finally saw a trail, which I took up the ridge. It looked unmaintained, and it passed some blown-down branches and other debris. It eventually met up with another trail that was easier to follow.
The trail basically went in an upward circle. I saw some ledges with some views, and I knew that I was getting close. Eventually I got to some ledges with much better views, and I had reached the summit.
The summit has good views of Hooksett and farther east and north. I got the views on video and took a few pictures. After that, I got a quick drink of water and ate a granola bar. I took in the view one last time and went back down to my truck.
