Ascent of Snake Mountain on 2022-12-17Date: | Saturday, December 17, 2022 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Snake Mountain | Location: | USA-North Carolina | Elevation: | 5560 ft / 1694 m |
Ascent Trip ReportWe would concur with all other trip reports that this is a spectacular ridge - narrow, rocky, exposed and just plain fun. However, we did want to explore an alternate route than the standard approach from the north.
Therefore, we parked at Elk Mountain State Park office and then walked down the road to the strip of land owned by the state. There is an old metal gate that is easy to climb over. From there we just made our way up to the top. The natural contour of the mountain did push us off state park land, but it is not posted at all. There is some barbed wire fencing that one needs to be aware of, but in general this was a very straight forward climb. Took about 1.25 hours from the car to reach the top.
Everything else along the ridge is as others have described it. I would also never do this in the summertime. It would be too overgrown for me. We thoroughly enjoyed the winter views during the ascent. |
