Ascent Trip ReportAfter having looked at Red Reef an innumerable amount of times while driving down to St. George, I was determined to summit this one over Thanksgiving break. There are a few good trip reports here already, so I'll just add a few details.
The chute climb out of the slot canyon isn't bad. There are plenty of foot and handholds - it is a fun, short canyon scramble.
Michael Toffey's ridge route worked well on my ascent - the ridge involves some class 3 scrambling, with no exposure. Lots of Navajo Sandstone formations. On the descent, I tried to find a way down the west ridge and then the canyon. This was tedious, and not recommended! After a couple futile attempts to find my way down a band of cliffy terrain (see GPS track) in the canyon, I ended up sidehilling on steep terrain (class 2-3) back to the main ridge, which I descended via the normal route. Lesson learned: do not go down the canyon north of the peak (unless you have some good ropes, and repelling gear).
Once down to the main trail, I did a second peak hike to Peak 4220, on the north side of the canyon. |
