Ascent Trip ReportPB shows 4 candidate highpoint areas for this County, I made 3 trips to complete, all as per this one TR.
VISIT #1, DATED 2010-08-01 ..... to Area 1
VISIT #2, DATED 2011-05-30 ..... TO Area 3 & 4
VISIT #3, DATED 2011-10-19 ..... To Area 2
AREA 1 .... I have driven over this one Area dozen's of times.
From the church in the village of Mercier, hwy #138 west of Chateauguay, drive south on rue de l'Eglise to its end, at a T junction with Chemin Saint Marguerite. Turn left and drive east on Saint Marguerite for 1km to a right turn (south) on Montee Saint Isidore (sign points to Saint Isidore 3km). Straight ahead .7km at the crest of the road is the highpoint ..... I have passed over this summit dozens of times, not knowing that this was a county highpoint. A little used quarry is on each side of the road.
On the east side of the road (summit) you'll see an orange marker, at its foot is a "Terres & Forests Quebec Point Geodesique Marker, 74K0105" embedded in concrete. My GPS coordinates read 45.30948, 73.71378.
The highpoint of the area however is about 40M further-on, on the same side of the road at a telephone pole.
PB's coordinates puts the spot 200M up the road at a much lower area.
I didn't visit the other 3 candidates on this first trip.
AREA 3 .... a cross-country hike in an open plowed field, 1.2km RT.
From the church in Saint Isidore drive north on Hwy #207 for .25km to a right (generally east) on Rue Dupuis, 1.2km to a left bend in the road, park here, this is the TH.
PB shows the high ground as being at this corner, this is definitely not the case, obvious higher ground can be seen to the south. I went by feel as my GPS and eye level in not reliable for elevation.
I walked south on a good farm track 300M to a barn, then right (west) 200M on another track (besides obvious high ground to the left). To the left (south) is my chosen HP, 50-60 M in a plowed field. Luckily it hadn't been planted.
A reliable eye level could easily pick a different location.
AREA 4 ..... a cross-country hike in an open plowed field, 1.8km RT.
From the church in Saint Isidore we drove south on Hwy #207 for 1.5km to a left (east) on Montee Sainte Therese, 1.6km on the left is the signed entrance, #1239 Montee Sainte Therese "Industry Canada Spectrum Observation Center". We drove up the driveway 200M to the building , 2 chaps standing by the front entrance gave us permission to park there, the high ground is to the north of here.
From the left side of the building I found a farm track heading north (deep ditch on its right side)). I followed the track about 400M to its end, at the north side of the small patch of woods to the left. I continued north/stayed with my line along the edge of a field (deep ditch still to my right), at 150M crossed a ditch at a row of trees, at another 50M crossed another ditch then another 50M came to a height-of-land where I turned left and walked west in a plowed field to the obvious high ground at about 230M. This is my chosen HP. Luckily the field had not been planted.
PB shows the spot as being northeast of my chosen HP in a much lower area. I returned the same way.
I went to Area 2 but found it to be planted, so I left it for after the harvest.
AREA 2 ..... farm tracks from the northeast side road ...... 2km, 40 minutes RT. This AREA 2 has more than one spot that contends for the high spot.
From the corner of Chemin Saint Marguarite and Montee Saint Isidore (see Area 1), we traveled northeast on Saint Marguarite for 1.6km to a right (southeast) on a side road which dead ends .7km in front of a small pond. This is the TH. To the southwest you are able to see the high ground on a small ridge at about half a kilometer ..... there is more than one spot that contends for "the" high spot in this Area 2.
This is beautiful fertile farm country (cabbage and peppers) and can only be visited on the off season. Today the fields were mostly plowed.
The Satellite Google Map clearly shows the route that I describe here. From the TH I walked southwest (right) on the track along the pond, 80M right on a farm track, 75M left on a farm track, 120M left on a track, 75M right on a another farm track (heading generally southwest on same line as the track along the pond from the TH). At 350M come to a T-Junction with a farm track, open plowed field straight ahead ...... walk 50M right then 50M left in the plowed field to the obvious PB highground, I chose my spot at 45.31858,-73.70958.
From first this spot I walked another 100m southwest to the next second obvious highground (forgot to take a reading). From this second area I walked back to the T-Junction, where I walked the track southeast 230M to a right on a track, 100M to a shed near a clump of trees.
The obvious third highground is 40M right then 30M left in a fallow field, I picked my spot at 45.31667,-73.70679.
One needs a good level to identify "the" spot of AREA 2.
