Ascent Trip ReportMet up with my brother late the night before. I had a permit for Whitney for Friday, and we needed to get one for him in the morning. Looking at the Falcon guide to the mountains of California, we thought that Lone Pine Mountain would make a good acclimatization hike. Geared up after getting the permits taken care of (and a monster pancake at Whitney Portal), we hiked up to Camp Lake. Taking into consideration the lateness of the day, the snow conditions and not wanting to waste energy that we would need on Friday with the "gravelly slog" ascent to the ridge, we called it off and went back to Lone Pine to eat and get ready for Whitney. This is a rarely visited valley (with Whitney next door), and we saw Mountain Lion tracks in the snow. I will definitely be heading back here when I get west again. |
