Ascent Trip Report

I had come to Pocahontas County W. Va. hoping to bag a number of peaks, but after doing two my car broke down. So this morning I took the chair lift down from my room at the resort to Shavers Lake for a day hike through fall foliage. From the lake I followed a marked trail around the west and north sides to the Bail Out Trail, a well marked but rocky ascent up to Cheat Ridge and the Snowshoe Fire Tower just north of the intersection of the Bail Out and Cheat Ridge trails. The 60 foot tower offers magnificent views in all directions. I hiked a mile north from the fire tower and then reversed and hiked the entire ridge until it emerges near the Snowshoe Resort check-in and near the CHP at Thorny Flat.
