From Marten Creek off FS Rd 505. Get here from Basalt. Most of the drive is paved and the final ~5.7m after turning onto Nast Tunnel Rd is 2wd and sedans can make it to Frying Pan Lakes TH.
Be careful once starting this loop. It is tempting to take the Fying Pan Lakes Trail from the start, which is what we did on accident in the dark early morning hours. You actually never go on that trail from the start and there are two small bridge options to get across Marten Creek from near the parking area.
Marten Creek Trail isn’t maintained and is hard to follow, especially in the dark or if wet. The first mile still exists fairly well but fades away the further you take it.
To do this epic loop route you will need a clear weather window, and bring plenty of water because there likely won’t be anywhere to fill up until you leave the ridge. We did not have any snow sources for water up high this time of year and we all carried 3L of water, which felt perfect. But if it had been a scorching hot day out that may not have been enough.
This route need not exceed C3. There were quite a few places with C3 scrambling, mainly in the second half (the Wayah peak side). We chose to do this loop counterclockwise so that we would be climbing up the scrambly parts instead of downclimbing them, and to save the more fun/aesthetic summits for the second half.
See Pk 12653 for the driving track.
