Ascent Trip ReportIt took a little while for my wife, Geri, and I to locate the best ascent path for Shepherd Mountain. First we tried the west side of the mountain and found a large religious camp. A sign read, "Check in at the office before entering," so I did not feel comfortable continuing to drive through open gates that could be closed and locked on us before we returned. We drove back to the south side of the mountain to a locked gate with 8 separate padlocks on it. We parked here, jumped the gate and hiked about 3/4 miles to the summit gaining about 500 feet during our climb. We reached a communication tower complex and I walked around the fenced towers in order to claim the highpoint according to county highpointing protocol. We took our summit photo here before we continued hiking on a dirt road several hundred feet to a fenced lookout tower. A short distance beyond the lookout tower were some elevated rocks that made a much better summit photo than back at the communication towers and I bet we were higher at this location anyway. There is no way to get a summit view at either location due to the forest, but I have read you can checkout a key from the religious camp on the west side of the mountain. It would be worth the time and effort. The lookout tower was extremely tall. It would be an exciting climb and definitely provide an amazing summit vista.
