Ascent Trip ReportWith Robin and Geraldine Howie, Rhona Fraser and Janet Lambert. We used the Shira Plateau route to reach Banafu Hut. We left the hut at 1am. Initially the rate of progress was good, the terrain underfoot being generally scree-free and easy. At 5200m the effect of altitude became more apparent and the route was getting steeper. It was very cold. We reached the crater rim at Stella point and briefly rested there. We continued on easy slopes round the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Kilimanjaro. We reached the summit at 7.20am. We returned to Stella Point and continued round the rim to Gilman's Point. We descended on the Marangu Route with a nice scree run down to Kibo Hut and then on to Horombo Hut, our resting place for the night. We arrived at the hut at 2pm so it had been a 13hour day. |
