Ascent Trip ReportMountaineers trip. Couldn't get permits so camped just outside the park boundary - we found a surprisingly nice spot to set up our tents right before the boundary marker, about half on bare ground and half on snow, with a nearby trickle of water that was just enough that we didn't have to melt snow for water. Left at 1:30am for our summit attempt. Put crampons on and roped up at about 6200 feet near high camp. Beautiful day with an inversion, amazing views above the clouds for sunrise.
Reached the base of the summit pyramid a little after 6:30am. The main route up the gully was clearly not in - too much steep hard snow (not enough to go up entirely on snow and would've been hard to protect), no one was attempting this way. Half our group went up to investigate the SE rib route. We decided it didn't make sense with the skill level of the whole group, especially as we didn't have a full rack of rock pro. The route was also pretty clogged up - we saw a group getting on the rock about an hour or two ahead of us and they seemed to be having some difficulties and taking a while to get up, and a guided group almost literally elbowed us out of the way as we did the transition onto the rock, in addition to another group of two who more politely skirted around us shortly after that as we debated if we should go for it.
Still a beautiful day to be out in the mountains and I'll have to come back to tag the summit another time. |
