Ascent Trip Report

SUMMARY
NEW ROUTE.
NO TRESPASSING.
MINIMAL BUSHWHACKING.
I strongly suggest all future highpointers avoid trespassing through the old Sequoia Pl route and use the Preserve route which is solely on public land.

DIRECTIONS
Google to Camano Ridge Forest Preserve TH.

EXPERIENCE
See the linked CalTopo map for breakdown of the important information (track, 594 and 595 lines, game trail markers). It also shows the Preserve trail system on the CalTopo MapBuilder layer which does not show up on any other Peakbagger layers.

Per LiDAR data, the true highpoint of Camano Island (595 ft) is SW of the old HP (591 ft). This can easily be checked in CalTopo, or in Google Earth as Brian McCarty did. I have mapped out the contending areas of 594 ft areas (one near the end of Sequoia Place and another as the outer ring around the 595 ft ring. Thankfully this point is within the Camano Island Preserve so no trespassing is required!

A very nice maintained trail begins from a large parking area on North Camano Ridge road. Follow the trail for ~0.7 miles East, North, and a tiny bit East until a faint game trail leads North. I marked this with a small stone cairn. Trust the trail - I stumbled across it during my initial bushwhacking attempt. It is well established and leads almost the entire way to the HP. (It curls South at the point I indicated but I didn't follow it further; someone else please explore and see where it goes).

From the end of the game trail it is only 75 yards to the HP. It's bad but not terrible PNW bushwhacking. Tromp around as much as your compulsive highpointing accuracy requires.

Total time for me was 45 minutes including my first misguided bushwhacking.

RATING
1/1 ACCESS (roads, restrictions) - public access TH
0/1 REMOTENESS (popularity, sight/Sound) - 3 other groups strolling and walking dogs. Horse riders arrived as I was leaving.
1/1 CONDITION (trail/route) - excellent trail and good game trail
0/2 VARIETY (flora/fauna, geology, terrain) - all dense forest
0/2 VIEWS (frequency, quality) - none
0/1 AWE (does it inspire) - only do it because it's a HP
0/2 DANIEL FACTOR (would I enjoy climbing this again: 0=No, 1=Meh, 2=Yes) - only do it because it's a HP. Camano Island is very interesting though!
TOTAL 2/10
(does not include difficulty since hikers may prefer opposite extremes)
