Ascent Trip ReportThe Art Loeb trail enters the Shining Rock Wilderness at Ivestor Gap, just south of Grassy Cove Top. Somebody decided that signs and blazes are inappropriate in a wilderness area, so you have to choose one of several well-worn unmarked paths. I chose one marked "Erosion" which leads up the SW side of Grassy Cove Top. This was not much worse than much of the Art Loeb trail, and it does lead directly to the summit. Later, I read that the CMC says stay off this trail. The SW side of Grassy Top was burned not long ago, and the rhododendron and blueberries are just knee-high.
This was part of a 10.3-mile roundtrip hike to Shining Rock, and the full trip report is posted there.
