Ascent Trip ReportThis was a solo backpacking hike starting at the Elk Lake Trailhead. It took me about 6 hours to cover the 10.2 miles across the Marcy Swamp up to the Panther Gorge LeanTo and up to the Four Corners trail junction. I didn't see anyone that entire time but as soon as I arrived to that point it was busy.. I hiked both Skylight and Gray, leaving my big pack hidden at the base of each. After those two peaks I continued down to one of the camping sites near the Feldspar LeanTo, across the foot bridge from the LeanTo. I think this was about 14 miles total, most with the big pack.
I hammocked and got woken up by rain at 4:00 a.m. By 4:20 it was raining hard, but I had packed up and ate some breakfast underneath a large tree where it was dry. By 4:45 I was on the trail, although right away I got lost trying to locate the trail across the foot bridge past the LeanTo, the toilets, etc. It was dark and pretty miserable with the hard rain. There were folks in the LeanTo and many tents. Hopefully I didn't wake anyone up. By 5:00 I figured it out and was moving. It was a fairly miserable slog with patches of hard rain and times when it wasn't raining. I didn't encounter too many people because of this weather. I was at the ADK Loj by 10:00 to get picked up. The sun was out by then. I had taken two bad falls in the morning and was a muddy mess. Overall I think it was over 21 miles. |
