Ascent of Haystack Mountain on 2011-09-04Date: | Sunday, September 4, 2011 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Haystack Mountain | Location: | USA-New York | Elevation: | 2874 ft / 875 m |
Ascent Trip ReportThis hike turned out to be "Plan C". Originally had planned on hiking Big Slide this weekend, but the High Peaks region was closed due to hurricane Irene. The DEC had posted a list of other mountain hikes that were open, so we had decided on Mount Ampersand. Just as we managed to squeeze into the last available parking spot there, a big thunderstorm pouring down buckets of rain swept through, so we headed to Saranc Lake to regroup. Eventually, the sky started to clear, and instead of heading back to Ampersand, we decided to go for Haystack, knowing there was plenty of parking there.
This turned out to be a very nice hike. The trail was in pretty good shape on the whole, though there was some obvious desctruction due to Irene. Most of the elevation gain is in about the last mile - quite steep though still not technical. The summit is quite open giving 180 degree views. Very nice. Easy to get a spot to sit on the rocks and take it in. The summit was not particularly crowded, though I might have expected more due to all the other trails in the High Peaks area being closed. A very pleasant "Plan C".
Somebody had written "46er's all the way!" in the trail register; I think they may have been a little confused as to which Haystack they were going to. |
