Ascent Trip ReportA moderate trail climb from just below the summit ...... 2.8km, 50 minutes RT.
Today we decided to visit the Isla de La Gomera, this being day #13 of our 19 day trip to Tenerife, my source of trail information was Rob Woodall.
We got on the first Ferry (8h45 hour, Los Cristianos/San Sebastian) for a sightseeing day in Parque National de Garajonay on the Isla de La Gomera. The 1 hour RT cruise cost us 102 Euros (2 people and the car), the huge Armas Ferry on this morning was 80% empty.
We drove a clockwise route, TF13/TF11, stopping at most of the lookouts, The climb to the top is particular spectacular with its awesome/numerous switchbacks, the hwy climbs a vertical ridge, the scenery is outstanding. You start out with arid/rocky terrain and once up high in the Park, green/dense/jungle-like vegetation. It ranks with one of the best drives we've ever been on.
We took the opportunity to visit the Highest Point of the Island "Alto de Garajonay". The TH Parking is at the very top of the Park, at Alto del Contadero on the northside of Hwy TF13 (a short distance after the road on the left to Alajero/Playa Santiago).
The well Posted Trail starts across the road and climbs moderately (through very dense/mossy/jungle-like vegetation) 1.4km to the summit ...... capped with a round/walled mirador with an Archaeological Site in its center. Garajonay is the only Park in Spain that can boast of having an Archaeological Site on its HP. The site was discovered/reproduced in 2002/2004. Dominating the 360 degree panorama is Isla de La Palma to the northwest and Pico Del Teide to the northeast. The lower sub-peak to the south is capped with Communication Towers.
