Ascent Trip ReportFrom NNE, standard route from Tuyomerto, good trail, generally well signed, has been partially rerouted in last few years making steeper sections easier. Some rooty scrambling near top, not difficult but needs care. Local spelling is Buthak, on all signs.
Tuyomerto is reachable by paved road except for last 200m (see GPS file), so a car or taxi would do, but we had booked ojeks to collect us from our hotel (Batu Hotel and Villas, excellent) at 0515. Having paid at Tuyomerto 'base camp' for permits (IDR15k each), we were hiking before 6am. Grey morning threatening rain, but it stayed dry for us. Path initially passes thru cultivated areas, neat crops including chilli peppers and cabbages. A few turns - follow signs Buthak or Puncak. Higher up, through forest, getting above the clouds with a nice view of Arjuno to N, and Kawi nearby to NW. A few tents at the various camping spots, but most popular campsite is the grassy area (old crater) Cemoro Kadang, beside a spring fed stream, an attractive spot. Above the camp site a R fork is signed Puncak, climbing steeply with rooty scrambling (a little muddy), or if preferred, bouldery scrambling protected by red webbing. Once on the ridge a short path leads L to the summit. A rough rock built platform (GPS S7.95526° E112.46513°) has a photo of Bung Karno (former president Sukarno), with the natural highpoint on level ground a short way to S (GPS 2874m, S7.95540° E112.46529°).
Enjoyed a view of sorts above the clouds then easy descent, trail now drier and less slippery than this morning. Hiring ojeks at trailhead seemed less than straightforward so we WhatsApped our driver and walked a short way downhill to the paved road to meet him.
This was the last of our 4 Java ultras. We returned via Surabaya to KUL to resume our Malaysia itinerary which had been modified due to short notice forest closures.
