Ascent Trip ReportPublic land, part of the Sheldon NWR. I drove good roads to the turnoff to Gooch Spring. From here the road is not bad really, call it 2WD high clearance but as always 4WD is handy especially in such remote country. The road is being reclaimed by nature and is fading into the sagebrush. Some center brush and then numerous relatively small rocks to drive over especially higher up. Not sure if I took the same route as Dennis as the area is laced with old unmapped abandoned roads but I got to more or less the same spot before I had enough of the road and parked. From here the walk was a mix of relatively open sagebrush cross country, old jeep tracks, and horsey use trail. No problems, light brush. Some wildflowers and wide views. Relatively pleasant spring desert ramble.
The isolation was the primary attraction for peak baggers as completing this peak converts the NV 25 mile isolation list into a subset of the NV P2K list since this is the only high isolation but sub-P2K peak. While my driving route was not too bad, one might also consider probing the Echo Canyon Patrol Trail Road coming from the SE as this looked at least as good where it intersected my route and it would be shorter from the mainline roads. There are undoubtedly many other lightly used jeep tracks that may or may not provide close access to the peak but others will have to explore that for themselves. |
