Ascent Trip Report

w Monica. One-Day Pemi Loop. Had wanted to do this in 2010 but achilles was in a walking cast so had to postpone. The rest of the randomites were off doing a traverse of the Kilkenny Range so we took the opportunity to do an "under the radar loop around the pemi".

We slept in the car and started at 4:25 AM with our headlamps - we chose to go around the loop clockwise, which I think was the right choice. The route is ~32 miles and climbs ~10,000 feet over the summits of Flume, Liberty, Little Haystack, Lincoln, Truman, Lafayette, Garfield, South Twin, Bond, and Bondcliff. Our goal was 15 hours but we would accept 18 hours - book time is 22 hours. We finished in 17 H 48 M.

We were quick up to Flume but the wind and wet rocks along the Franconia Ridge and the section between Lafayette and Garfield slowed us down quite a bit. We were on a 15 hour pace at Flume and an 18 hour pace at Lafayette but had dropped all the way back to a 22 hour pace after our 45 minute break (iced the achilles) when we left the Galehead Hut.

Decided to pick it up a bit on the climb to South Twin and did the final 16 miles four hours faster than book time. We made quick work of the climb, the Twinway, the descent down from Bondcliff, and the hike out along the final sections of the Wilderness and Lincoln Woods Trails. We ended up finishing in 17 H 48 M.

Only 51 minutes into the hike Monica asked "whose idea was this hike" - but that was the only time we uttered those words. We were in for a long day of hiking up and down so why bring in the negative energy. We didn't actually all much at all - we would talk at the breaks but while hiking most of our energies were focused on getting the hike done.

Not sure if we will do it again - there is a fine line between "first annual" and "one and only".
