Ascent Trip Report

Jeremy and I started climbing The Cascade around 9:30 AM. I let Jeremy take the lead since I had lead everything the first day. The ice was in good shape except a little thin at the exit of the waterfall. The snow between the exit of the waterfall and the dike was shin to knee deep. We started in the dike but climbed out of it to get in shallower snow. The snow above the next headwall was mostly knee deep with a few deeper places where we would fall though. We decided to go straight up and not traverse left across the top of the slide which is shaped like a "7". Once the grade increased at the last bit of the slide, the snow was thigh deep and the pace slowed significantly and even more so once we got past the tree line. At this point I couldn't keep up with Jeremy and told him I'd meet him at the summit. Jeremy found a great path through the trees that wandered but avoided having to push through the thick branches of the trees. After what felt like a long slog, I made it to the bare rock of the summit. Jeremy was trying to find the path of least resistance as I cleared the trees. He decided to solo up this vertical crack that had a number of horizontals about fist sized. On top he joked that I should try to go around the right side to avoid the M14 solo. The funny thing is he had hexes that would have been the perfect size for the crack but I had the rope. Probably should have roped up for that section. I took a path around the right side which was definitely the easier path...except for the spruce trap I fell in and became an unhappy turtle. The more I tried to roll over and get out the deeper the pack sank and the higher my feet got. Finally, I had to take the pack off to get out. Once on the summit we enjoyed a quick snack before cruising down the nicely packed snow on the normal trail. I don't recall the exact time but we made it back down the road from the trailhead to our cars before the sun went down.
