Ascent Trip ReportEasy/moderate trail loop over 3 Peaks ..... 6.6 miles. 3h10 Loop for all 3 Peaks.
I decided on a loop trip over 3 Peaks ..... from the Sunapee Lodge I ascended the Summit Trail sb (2 miles) to Sunapee, the solitude trail eb (.9 miles) to White Ledges then the Newbury trail eb (.75 miles) to Mount Sunapee-South Peak). I descended the Newbury/Rim trail to the campground at the access road then the Duckling Ski Run back down (2.9 miles) to the Sunappe Lodge. The whole loop trip a standard trail hike from easy to moderate, except at the South Peak where the trail does not go over the actual summit and is as per below.
If you are out for views only, you need-go no-further than Sunappe Mountain ....outstanding panorama, especially of the Sunapee Lake area. The Sunapee summit area and the solitude trail was very busy on this day with hikers (families) who had ascended on the Chair Lift.
MOUNT SUNAPEE-SOUTH PEAK
The Newbury Trail stays to the north side, just below the summit, and to get to the actual summit involves a short bushwack ..... As you walk eastbound on the auburn blazed Newbury Trail from White Ledges you arrive at a height-of-land with the heavily wooded summit area on the right, an auburn blaze on a large tree to your left. Leave the trail here and bushwack (right) 75-100 yards to the higher ground, the mixed woods are open with tall ferns under-growth ..... the summit is fairly obvious, an orange flag tape has been added.
From here we rushed west into Vermont's Killington area for an afternoon hike to Shrewsbury Peak.
"YOU HAVE TO BE OUT THERE TO EXPERIENCE NATURE'S GIFTS."
