Ascent Trip ReportFollowing the last night's adventure I had and the lack of rest it led to, I reassessed my goals for the trip. I decided to go bag an easy summit and then hike out back into civilization. Mont du lac Génois seemed to be the best candidate and I left towards it early in the morning.
The road was nice, weather was fine, and I soon reached the crossroads towards lac Génois. It wasn't long until the next crossroads from where the final logging trail went up to the summit's base. The spot where the real ascent would start was near the top of that trail. Ground was keeping water and I had to navigate some difficult swampy ponds. I left my pack there and tried to find the best way up into the woods. I followed the general ridge with my GPS but I soon spotted the characteristic brush cutter stumps I sometimes find in réserve faunique des Laurentides. I tried to follow them as they went up and it wasn't too hard to stay in the easier going they provided. Further up, it was harder to follow them and I made straight for the last closed contour. I wandered a while until I was pretty sure to have hit the high mark. It was hard to figure out as the summit was very thickly covered in vegetation.
Then I made it back down on an easterly course. The going was easier than on the way up and I soon met with another cutter swath that was leading south towards my starting point. It was much faster hiking to my pack and when I retrieved it, I ate some snacks before starting to backtrack all the way to Forêt Montmorency. Somewhere between lac Morency and lac Malin, I met a SÉPAQ vehicle. The driver stopped to inquire about my hike and I talked a bit about what I had experienced. He was curious about Moose as he's a hunting guide and prepares some caches and salt blocks. It turns out he cuts all those swathes towards summits where he sets up hunting caches.
It was a fun conversation and after 5 minutes we parted. I kept going towards chute de la rivière Noire. I took a short break at the hut there to eat more snacks. Some people had put up the 'occupied' chain across the stairs so I kept away. I soon was on my way towards the main Pavillion at a good pace but definitely getting tired. I was now racing against the clock not to miss my bus and have to wait 6 more hours for the next one.
When I got near lac Piché, I decided to take a shortcut. I made a mistake and it became a difficult task to get back on track. I couldn't cross rivière Montmorency, the current was strong and it was too deep. I decided to regain lac Laflamme's access road and was probably going to miss the bus. I nonetheless went as fast as I could. I was now out of water. When I reached route 33, there were many vehicles going both ways. The third the passed me going towards the pavillion stopped. The woman asked if I wanted a lift and I gladly accepted. I told her she could drop me at the pavillion. Seeing it was only 500m further, she asked where I was going. When I told her I was going back to Québec, she said she could take me all the way there.
I was extremely fortunate in my misfortune as I was back home 30 minutes before the bus was scheduled to be back at the station, with an extra ticket for a later trip.
