Ascent Trip Report

CoHP – CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OHIO
1,390+ ft.

Saturday, 7/16/2011

The Saturday events at the Konvention included a pancake breakfast that began around 8:00am as I recall. Next on the schedule of importance was the ceremony at the HP that began at noon. I had to decide the best way to utilize the time between the two events.

Yesterday, an evening reception was held at Ohio Caverns located in Champaign County about 15 miles south of the state HP. When I looked at the map for the Champaign County HP, I noted that the caverns were on the same map, just a few miles west of the HP. So I knew I had time to make the round trip, and I would get to climb this HP if the crop conditions would permit.

I set my GPS to the HP coordinates and followed the route into Champaign County. From Stevenson Road (CR 28 in Logan County, CR 11 in Champaign County), I turned right (SW) onto the appropriately named Bump Road. From this vantage point, it was easy to see the target, a prominent bump laying in the field ahead and to the north side of Bump Road.

I parked just off the road near the HP, just before the road makes a bend to the left in a more SW direction. The HP land was planted in ankle-high soybeans, so I knew I could make the hike with minimal damage to the crops. On a compass bearing of 320 degrees, I set off into the field, dry and easy to cross. It was a quick trip to the HP, where I wandered around just a bit until I believed that all highest grains of dirt had been touched. I was back at the car in less than 15 minutes, hiking about 0.30mi. for the roundtrip.

I still had some time to kill, so it was on to my next target, Miami County.
