Ascent Trip Report

Jeff and I were sick of moving and the weather was great, so we decided to hike. We'd been planning to try another Pemi Loop and decided that day was as good as any other (except that we were sleep deprived and tired from moving all week). Had a goal of sub-12 hours - which we JUST missed - ended up doing it in 12 hours 15 minutes or so. Couldn't have asked for better weather - sunny and clear for great views (though lots of sun), not too hot and a slight breeze on the summits. Chatted with M&M at Lincoln Woods (they were hiking Owls Head), then were on the trail just before 6am. Flew up Flume in 1 hr 50 minutes. Jeff fell hard on his way to Liberty and banged up his knee, but felt he could continue. We hit all our next peaks on pace for a sub-12 hour day... though I could definitely feel that my legs were tired from the week and my climbs up Lincoln and Lafayette weren't the fastest. Stopped for a super-quick break on the way off Lafayette and mentally prepared for the slog over Garfield to Galehead hut.
The climb up Garfield in this direction was much better than the other direction and I arrived at the top - slow - but not hating the mountain... Eventually made it to the hut - where we saw Ed Hawkins... and had a chance to refill water and eat. The climb up South Twin sucked and we lost a lot of time over this stretch, but we flew across the Twinway in record time and made it to Guyot ahead of schedule. Grateful to be skipping West Bond (which we both had in July anyway), we flew up Bond and over to Bondcliff... Then the long slog out. Made great time on the way down - feeling much stronger here than i was in the middle of the day. Stopped to soak feet and change socks... Took a bad step and slightly twisted my ankle, but enough to stop me from fast walking/jogging the way out. Upset tummy on the way out too from the all exertion, but feet felt pretty good after a 31 mile day in record time!
