Ascent Trip ReportHeaded Out from trail head at frying pan creek. The entire trail (part of wonderland) was still entirely covered in snow. Headed up this trail about 4 miles to summerland and then ascended the snow slopes to meany crest. Set up camp at meany crest near the rock section (first group to set up) around 130pm. Left for the summit around 1245am. The Whitman Glacier has steep snow slopes around 45 degrees. We picketed most of the upper Whitman. Most of the rock was still covered in snow near the summit, only had to scramble through about 50 feet of an easy snow/rock section to the summit. Summited at 740am, hung out until about 930am, and began the descent. Ran into the other group of 8 around 1030 attempting to ascend the upper Whitman glacier--they had to turn around due to soft snow conditions. Descent from Summit included down-climbing the upper whitman and post-holing the entire way out (snow was very, very soft). Got to camp around 330pm and packed up. Got back to TH around 830pm. On the way down we accidentally went down the wrong gully to fryingpan creek and had to hike back up about 450ft to get back on track. It ended up being about an 0.8 mi detour. |
