Ascent Trip Report

Great Saturday driving trip with a late start to a peak I've not done in years. The best part was seeing new growth of pine, cedar and fir on the summit, now twelve years after I stood with a friend atop Hall Canyon Debris Basin in La Canada and watched the fire start. With a great sense of foreboding, we kept saying, "Why aren't they giving this all the air attack they can? Why aren't they on it?" Bureaucratic bullshit between the County, USFS and whoever else kept the aircraft landed. Of course, three days later it was like I would imagine a war zone to be, without the bombs, the autos. Black ash dropping everywhere, tankers and helicopters overhead. There is a beautiful memorial to Ted Hall and Arnie Quinones, the two firefighters who were killed in the Station Fire. We lost them, thousands of animals, plants, trees, and the little Hidden Springs store.

Anyway, it was good to be in the Angeles Forest atop this beautiful mountain and to run into other walkers, runners, hikers and two BMW motorcycle riders (a 1200RT and a 1200GS) along the way.
