Ascent Trip ReportI decided to summit Tajumulco for the nature, to explore more of Guatemala and go to some altitude, but mostly for the stats. Took a chicken bus from Guate to San Macos (80 quetzales ($10+)). It's the most difficult part of the trip. With Friday traffic it took me 7 hours in not the most comfortable bus. Stayed in a hotel in San Marcos (hotels.com, $16). In the morning took a bus to the start of the hike (Q10) - you can tell the driver "al volcan", "cerro Tajumulco" or "Llano de la Guardia" - it's the same place and they know where it is. Hiked to the top: it's a bit over 3,000', easy. Took me 3 hours from the bus stop to the top and I wasn't in a hurry. The hike and the nature are similar to Rucu Pichincha in Ecuador. I had to pay Q25 entrance fee as a foreigner. It was a school break Saturday with good weather, so I met about 100 other people: several school and guided groups, many of them planning to stay overnight at the saddle or at the summit. Some groups had porters or horses.
Overall a straightforward hike and unless you are already in Xela the only reason to travel there is the stats. |
